Celebrate life’s tender moments with this crispy, golden fried chicken recipe brined in sweet tea and served over fluffy waffles — born from a day of joy, loss, and front porch dreaming. Made to bridge the distance between kitchens and kin—for generations to come.

June 8, 2025.

The kind of day that wraps joy and grief in the same thread and hands it to you before you’ve had your morning coffee.

I woke to a sweet message from my mama and Swade’s Nana:

“Happy 2 months to Swade!”

Two months of learning his rhythms, watching his eyelashes grow, and rocking in our porch chair dreaming about what might come next. Two months of motherhood that’s felt like holy ground and high water—every day different, every day full.

But within the hour, the phone rang. My dad’s voice came through, low and heavy: my mama’s last living sibling had passed away. My uncle. A backwoods kind of man—big Midwestern guy, the kind who’d fix your tire and feed you good. The kind of guy who knew his way around a grill and a good story.

And just like that, life and loss sat down at the same table.

here’s something tender that happens in these moments—when you’re caught in the push and pull of life and loss. It’s where legacy lives. Where memory gets passed not through grand gestures, but through the everyday things: the way your hands move through flour, the way your heart aches a little sweeter when you stir something good.

This recipe was born on that day.

Not out of sadness—but out of soul & a small rebellion against the ache.

Because when the world feels too heavy to name, we create. We cook. We feed others. We remember.

My uncle would’ve liked this one—crispy, bold, not too fancy, sweet in just the right way. The kind of meal you make with both hands and your whole heart. The kind that brings people in from the porch with just the smell.

So, here’s to the backroads that raised us, the kitchens that hold us, and the grit that lives on when good men pass.

Cheers! here's to pickle pizza and chicken wings at Grandma’s Bar & Grill, Uncle!

To the last son of a grandfather, I barely got to know—but still feel in the rhythm of my days.

And to Swade, my boy—two months old and already stitching new stories into this patchwork legacy.

Cheers to legacy of kitchen tables and pickup trucks and sticky fingers and stories told between bites.

If you’re here for the recipe, it’s below.

If you’re here because you’ve ever felt that thunder in your chest when joy and grief collide—then I hope this one holds you a little, too.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This isn’t just fried chicken — it’s a memory you can taste.

Here’s why it’ll earn a forever spot in your kitchen:

  • It's sweet tea kissed and soul-deep crispy. Brined in sweet tea with bay leaves and salt, the chicken turns out tender on the inside, crackly on the outside, and full of flavor that lingers.

  • Built for real life, made with heart. You can make this with pantry staples, a boxed waffle mix, and a little time. It’s approachable but feels special — like something Grandma would've made on a Sunday.

  • A recipe with roots. Born on the West Coast, inspired by Midwest grit, and carrying whispers of Southern soul, it’s a beautiful reminder that food connects us—across generations, landscapes, and lives.

  • It feeds more than hunger. Whether you’re celebrating or grieving, gathering or grounding — this dish shows up with the kind of comfort that words can’t always give.

  • Totally customizable. Go bold with cream cheese syrup and strawberry compote or keep it simple with real butter and warm maple syrup. No wrong turn here.

(Why we fry in cast iron, and maybe always will)

Sure, some folks will tell you a fancy deep fryer is the only way to get that perfect crunch. But around here? We believe in cast iron and conviction.

There’s just something about a skillet that’s been seasoned by stories. Ours has seen tears, triumphs, and probably a few burnt pancakes — but she holds heat like a memory and sears flavor into every bite like she means it.

We don’t baby her. She’s heavy. She’s stubborn. And she makes the crispiest

dang chicken this side of the Mississippi!

She’s the kind of kitchen heirloom you pass down with a wink and a warning:

don’t you dare scrub her with soap.

So if you’re still frying in something that’s nonstick and lifeless, maybe it’s time you met the real MVP.

🪵 Final Thoughts

Food can carry us. Through grief. Through milestones. Through long days and late nights and new beginnings. This one came from the crossroads—where sweetness meets salt, where family meets farewell, and where a little boy turning just two months old reminded me that legacy isn’t just what we inherit…It’s what we create.

Cheers to what we’re building. To what we remember. To what we pass down.

Healthier Swaps (if ever needed)

  • Use air fryer or oven-fried methods

  • Go light on syrup or swap with mashed fruit or compote

  • Try a whole grain waffle or almond flour variation

  • Replace some brown sugar in breading with herbs or smoked paprika for savory depth
